Pick + place positioning system

The compact pick and place system illustrated was designed and manufactured for a major UK automotive components supplier. Its function was to pick and dispense sheets of A4 sized fabric from an integral magazine and present them to the end effector of an existing 6-axis robot.

The specification from the customer included a very small footprint to fit the system into, as the application was a modification to an existing line which would not allow for position or programming changes. Additionally, the product was porous and not suited to traditional vacuum cup methods of pick-up. The solution was to use innovative Bosch Pneumatics Non-Contact Transfer (NCT) units, which create dynamic lifting force using positive airflow (Bernoulli principle) to handle components without requiring a physical seal with their surface. The system used its own self-contained control circuit with external sensors to detect and imitate the raising of the magazine stack and pick/place the sheet.
